Shoplifting is a major problem and numerous measures are employed to prevent it. Security gates, security guards and CCTV are well known examples. However, now that consumers do more and more of their shopping online, new challenges have presented themselves.
Some online shops utilise no more than a few computer systems, but achieve a turnover that would previously have required dozens or even hundreds of brick and mortar shops. Shoplifting from a digital shop may be more difficult, but it certainly is not impossible.
Stealing money is not the only way to do damage to an online business; issues such as blackmail through DDoS or disabling IT systems are very real. A digital shop needs appropriate security just as much as a physical one.
